Check to see if you have the Sophos on-access anti-virus scanner running. If the scanner is active, the anti-virus software is attempting to scan the large encrypted file (sparse bundle). You will need to stop the scanner, by following the directions here. You may need to log in as administator to get logged in as the scanner may be stalling the user account log in. Simply excluding the sparse bundle will not be sufficient to resolve this issue.
