I just got a high speed connection ( modem or DSL). How should I configure my computer for hosting the maximum number of clients?
Basically you need to make certain that any machine that’s hosting GPL is always getting 36 fps. Anything less, and packet delivery to your clients will be slowed, which can seriously compromise the quality of their racing or even cause them to disconnect. See the frame rate section of the Hardware FAQ for details. If you can put together a separate machine for hosting, I think you’ll be a lot happier. It doesn’t have to be very fast; I’m using a Pentium 233 with Stealth II S220 (Rendition 2100) and 64 mb and that works fine as a GPL server. I use a couple of lines in core.ini to allow longer replays: [ Replay ] replayMemoryOverride = 30000 Special Note: A number of people have written that their core.ini settings have no effect in GPL. The problem is that they’ve used the sample file, core.ini.sample, which comes with GPL 1.2, instead of core.ini. The fix is easy. Go here. GPL seems to have a bug which causes the host’s car to be a lot more fragile than it should be. Also, offloading
