The first step is to contact your local parish or county Planning & Development department to find out if your property is in a flood zone, then talk to the old time neighbors who have seen heavy rains and floods for many years, and find your property in http://www.lamappingproject.com/ to see immediately if it’s in one of the flood zones. You may need a bench mark or elevation on your property, check to see if there isn’t already one there, it may save you some money. The cost is around $175. Then you will have a better idea of what trees you can keep, if any. Remember young trees can tolerate some dirt being placed close to them and around their roots but usually this will, in time, stunt or kill the old trees. Refer to my “What You Should Know Page”.
