I just bought a house that has the exhaust from gas furnace and fireplace going up the same flue. Can the fireplace and gas furnace be on the same flue?

Wood smoke and gas fumes cannot run up the same flue according to both the NFPA211 (National Fire Protection Association) and the SBCC (Southern Building Code Congress). I believe other codes are also the same. But, more than likely you have multiple flues in the same chimney.
