I insert an applet and it works fine on my local machine, but when I ftp the site to my web server and I view the page, all I see a gray box where the applet should be. What is going on here?

The gray box problem after uploading your site to your web server is most likely caused by a missing “_frontlook” folder on the web server. If you manually ftp the site to your web server, you must copy the _frontlook folder to the web also. The _frontlook folder must be in the same directory as the page that uses the applet. If you cannot see the _frontlook folder in your FP Folders List, then go to the Tools Menu and select Web Settings… Then go to the Advanced tab and select “Show documents in hidden directories”.
