Though scientists categorize scales by certain characteristics,6 the Torah is only concerned with whether or not a scale can be easily removed without tearing the skin, irrespective of its shape, color or size.7 From the Torah’s perspective, the various scientific classifications of scales are irrelevant. Statements made by certain “experts” about certain types of scales always being kosher are not true.
