If the problem is what’s knows as “The HDMI Handshake Error”, the symptom is often that the TV blacks out when going from the XMB to a game or vice versa. You’ll have to turn the TV off and on, or reselect the HDMI input on it, for it to show the picture again. This is caused by the way HDMI works. Simply put, when outputting through HDMI, the PS3 and your TV says “Hello!” to each other. Sometimes this communication becomes garbled in some way, or it times out (one part doesn’t respond within a set timeframe). For some TV owners, this problem has been solved by updating the TVs firmware. Others are still waiting for Sony to correct this through a PS3 firmware upgrade. Another option is to use another connection type (e.g. Component). Some people find that Component will give you a better picture than HDMI, but it’s a matter of personal preference. Personally, I like Component better.
