In August 2004, Microsoft announced that it would make the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF, “Avalon”), Windows Communication Foundation (WCF, “Indigo”) Web services technologies, and the .NET Framework 3.0 (“WinFX”) application programming interface (API) available for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (or later). Previously, these technologies had been described as key parts of Windows Vista (“Longhorn” at the time) for developers. However, Microsoft realized that developers would be more apt to target Avalon and Indigo if they were available to a wider audience than just Windows Vista. Since then, Microsoft has announced that other Vista technologies, such as Internet Explorer 7 and the Windows Sidebar would be ported to Windows XP as well.
