I heard of sewer rats the size of cats! How big can rats get?
Domestic rats are actually often bigger than their wild anscestors and range from 1/2 to 1 3/4 pounds, the largest ever being 2 1/2 pounds. In comparison, a full grown cat weighs from 5 to 20 pounds. The only way a rat is bigger than a cat is if the cat is a very young kitten and the rat a large adult male. In short, if you think you saw a rat the size of a cat, you saw a stray cat or dog (which can be much uglier than a rat–especially if the animal has been in a few fights, and tragically, when people see ugly, they think rat).
