You may have heard about one of several different things. For a long time, shots of cortisone have been available. These last for about six weeks and reduce allergy symptoms during that period of time. Unfortunately, there are same side effects with injected cortisone as there are if it is taken by mouth – they can be serious. But in addition, unlike oral cortisone, it cannot be stopped since it’s already injected. Once it’s injected, it is impossible to get rid of it for that same 6 week period. The other is a potentially new form of allergy shot which is currently under investigation. The individual allergen (e.g. cat) is modified so that when injected, it does not cause an allergic reaction! As a result, more concentrated shots can be given.
