In short it doesn’t. There is no legal way that I know of to get another social security number from the government outside of identity theft. The other two common options are to either have you form a company where by you are doing business as another name (d.b.a.) or to spend several hundred dollars incorporating a business. For both of these options you can get a federal tax identification number. The only problem with these approaches is when you go to apply for credit, most companies want your personal social security number in connection with the application and you are right back to square one.
