I hear that some people use a sterile technique when doing trach care while others don’t. Why the discrepancy?
A. People who have impaired immune systems are much more susceptible to respiratory tract infections and must use sterile techniques. However, people that have a trache- ostomy for sleep apnea should not have to worry about this. HOWEVER, you should have good hygiene and wash your hands before doing trach care.
