Ideally, you ought to be able to say, “That’s personal,” and have people respect your privacy. But realistically, that type of an answer would only make them more curious. Your only options are to tell a complete lie or to tell a partial lie. A complete lie should be so boring and vague that no one remembers it. Office jobs are good. “I’m in strategic office support.” “I’m an office assistant.” “I am a clerical consultant.” If they ask what the company does, it better be boring, too. A partial lie would be that you are just a food server, or a cashier, both of which are part of your job (I assume). If they ask where, just say it’s out in [whatever town]. If you act ashamed of having such a low-paying job, and distract them by saying you want to get your degree (which is technically true), they will hopefully not press further.
