Salvia CAN be used as an entheogen. It is used as such when taken as part of a serious spiritual quest; but most ‘Western’ salvia usage would not qualify as entheogenic. The issue of the spiritual/religious use of salvia has been a hotly debated in the Salvia email list–to say the least! Perhaps one of the few statements that most list members can agree upon regarding entheogenic use of salvia is “Some people take salvia with the intent of having a spiritual or religious experience and claim to be able to achieve one from it”.
