I have read about sleep apnoea and how being overweight can cause it. What exactly is it?
Sleep apnoea is a potentially serious condition caused or made worse by being overweight. In sleep apnoea the body s airways become blocked due to the pressure of excess fat around the neck. You actually stop breathing. This causes you to wake up temporarily so you can unblock your airways and begin breathing again. This may happen as often as 200-600 times per night. As a result your sleep is highly disrupted leaving you very tired and less responsive during the day. Weight loss can reduce snoring and improve sleep apnoea.
