You can start them off in four inch pots or even smaller but you will need to plant them out in the soil once they are 6″ to 8″ tall and give them a frame of some sort to climb up. The ashes depends on what was burned but 6″ sounds OTT. If it was wood or plant matter it will contain Potash which is good for producing flowers and ultimately seed pods. Burned paper doesnt do any good but un-bunrt in the bottom of a trench is good for moisture retention and will help keep the roots moist. So, dig a trench 8″ to 10″ deep, put old newspapers in the bottom, backfill with the soil, plant the beans about 8″ to 12″ apart. Scarlet Emperor, Streamline, Enorma are all good varieties to grow.
