Automated collection vehicles have arms that can pick up and empty trash carts and return them to the curb. The driver does not have to leave the vehicle. Semi-automated vehicles have tippers on the back. Operators can roll carts to the back of the vehicle, and then the tipper will lift and tip the contents of the cart into the vehicle.
