I have had repeated cooling system problems, water pump, heater core, radiator and still the engine is over heating. Am I doing something wrong?
The answer is likely yes and no. You may well be doing the repairs correctly, but you may not be addressing the root cause. Many times it goes like this: The engine you mentioned has a history of intake manifold leakage and this can be quite tricky to diagnose. The coolant level goes down and air enters the system. Often tap water is used to top off, rather than distilled water and a system bleed. Now there is corrosive liquid, temperature and oxygen. These components can quickly destroy the cooling system. The corrosion eats away at the thin aluminum radiator and heater core. This introduces aluminum oxide which is a strong abrasive. The abrasive destroys the water pump seal and hastens the demise of the radiator and core. The other aluminum components such as cylinder heads and intake base, are being attacked as well. Replacing the leaking water pump is simply too little, too late. The problem has not been resolved and will get worse. Continued driving can result is repair that excee
