I have classical PKU, can I use BetterMilk since it has phe?
Lets step back and look at the big picture. BetterMilk contains 1.53 mg phe per gram of protein and provides 92 mg of phe for those taking 60 g protein equivalent per day. Many foods in the diet that we consider “low protein” are not all that low in phe. For example, a 300 g traditional entre-size mixed green salad has 4.8 g of protein and 216 mg phe, or 45 mg of phe per gram of protein before dressing is applied. Ketchup has 23 mg phe per gram of protein. Even an apple, which is considered practically free in the diet, contains 22 mg phe per gram of protein! BetterMilk is a VERY low phe, high protein drink. Contrary to this concern, those with the lowest phe tolerance, the classical PKUs, will benefit most from the use of BetterMilk. Their bodies are less able to metabolize phe than milder PKUs, and BetterMilk improves protein utilization, which means phe utilization is also improved. Studies show that phe concentrations are significantly reduced (by 1314%) with consumption of the GMP
