When we make a FULL backup, we also make an empty delta backup. The delta backup ( even this empty one) contains the VMX, the logs and information about the VM and backup. A Full backup is nothing more then a gzip copy of the -flat.vmdk. So instead of messing with a simple gzip full, we create the empty delta to go along with it. Also if you turn off the Seperate FUll/Delta folder option, then the folders will be created without the .FULL or .DELTA.
