Forget chemicals or livestock to control your algae – they have to many other issues you need to worry about. The former introduces toxins into your fishes precious water, the latter mean buying messy fish that will usually do a lousy job at algae cleaning (or grow out of it). Trust me on this one: For the best algae control, just don’t use the aquarium light. Without live plants you have no need for direct aquarium lighting. Instead, turn on the room light – this will provide what the fish need to see by, without creating algae problems. You can leave the room lights on for as long you need to or want to without a problem. In fact, the only tank on which I keep the aquarium lights on, except when I’m actually home to view the tanks, is the planted one. In the rest I simply avoid live plants and direct lighting, and have very minimal algae growth to deal with.
