I have a wireless management tool that can recommend AP locations. Can this be used in lieu of a formal site survey?

In general, and certainly for any critical applications, a site survey is required. These tools can be useful to gauge estimates for deployment but they are not a substitute for an actual survey. A site survey provides far more than how many APs are required to “cover” a facility.
