I have a job offer wherein I can only give 12 days notice to my current employer. Should I take the new job?
Don’t let the 12 day notice dissuade you. There is no law that says you have to give two weeks notice. If you have a contract that requires two weeks notice, the max you can be liable for is the cost of a temp for two days. If the new job is better for you that two days pay is minor. If you are worried about losing a good reference, then talk to your boss (or the person you want to use as a reference). If they are someone who thinks highly of you (which they should be if you are asking them for a reference) then they won’t talk down about you for only giving 12 days notice. Moreover, many companies have a policy that supervisors are not to give references (positive or negative) due to fear of liability for defamation. Some companies do have a policy that you cannot be rehired if you don’t give a minimum of two weeks notice. If this is your fear, again, talk to your boss.
