Until recently, the standard way to make a tooth colored crown is to use porcelain fused to metal crown. The porcelain is baked onto a metal substructure which is needed to provide strength. Unfortunately, it is difficult to mask out the dark color of the metal. Therefore, the margin of the crown has to be in metal. If the gum recedes, the dark metal margin shows more. With the technology we have today, we can eliminate the metal margin, or even eliminate the metal in the crown completely.
