the gear linkages may have buckled out of place or the screws that join the linkages together may have come unfastened therefore when u move the gearstick within the standard h position the lever is moving but the linkage isn’t moving the arm directly connected to the gear box this is a common fault on most German cars and since some of the connecting arms have plastic housing the whole system could be out of place this is a very cheap job the linkages cost about £12 and fitting on top it depends also on the model of BMW estate u have is it a 325, 520 or 525 if u specify then i can give u more tips one last thing the clutch may be hydraulic but the gear mechanism is still the basic connecting rods also check the hydraulic fluid in the clutch reservoir
