Put in 3 quarts, run the engine til the oil light goes out, then shut it down and sit for 10 minutes for all the oil to go to the pan so you can check and see how much more you should add to bring it to the right level. Make sure the car is on level ground when the oil is checked. I like to use Mechanics Engine flush before I change oil to get rid of all sludge and crud. I’m not saying you have to do this, but i like to.
