This problem is usually due to the crown having it’s edge or margin end with metal and the recession of your gum that originally covered this area. Sometimes it is also due to gum recession uncovering a darker root. Although we can usually improve this problem by placing a tooth colored filling over the area in question, the only way to properly give you the beautiful, esthetic and natural look you want, requires remaking the crown. In this type of situation, we generally recommend that the new crown either be made with all porcelain or at least have a porcelain edge so that even if the gum recedes, no metal margin will ever show. Critical to preventing this situation from reoccurring, the gums must be healthy to start, and the tooth must be carefully prepared. Finally, the fit and the contours of the new crown must be perfect, or the problem is likely to reoccur.
