As far as your background and criminal history goes, that’s your business. As for the permit, you are eligible to be issued a permit at age 18 by state law. However, firearms dealers are licensed by the federal government, which stipulates that dealers may not sell handguns to anyone under age 21. So if you are under 21, you may be given a handgun or purchase one from an individual (see Indiana Code for specifics, that is a generality), but because federal law regulates firearms dealers, you may not purchase from a dealer until you are 21.
