I don’t think they’re necessary at all- in fact, I think in many cases they are harmful. The people I always looked up to most in my life didn’t try to fit into a category or try to make themselves into something someone else thought they should be. In my opinion, the characteristics of the female gender were arbitrarily attatched to the female sex, the same is true for the male gender and sex. What children really need is the encouragement that what they are and how they think is ok- not that they should think the same way all the other little girls/boys in their age range think.

I’m not sure, but I personally like having gender-based role models. My dad teaches me what a real father should be and my mom teaches me what a real mother should be.
