I found a dog. What can I do to find its owner?

The best thing to do if you found a lost dog is to take it to the shelter. As an experienced vet tech, I can’t tell you how many times people are not reunited because someone keeps the pet and just posts flyers or ads in the paper. The number one place someone looks for their pet first is the local shelter. If you like you can always take the dog to your vet first to have him/her scanned for a microchip. If the dog is chipped then they can contact the company that the dog is registered with to locate the owner(s). If there is no chip I would highly advise you to take the dog to the shelter. Let the shelter know that if the owners do not show up or claim their dog that you are willing to take the dog back. This way you can avoid the dog being placed for adoption or euthanized and you can then post signs and ads in the paper.

I contacted the local shelter and made a report with them.  About half an hour later I received a call from the shelter that the owners were there looking for their dogs.  Thank you for your help in reuniting the dogs with their owners.
