If you currently hold (or will soon be awarded) a Bachelor’s degree, but do not have a Master’s, you must apply to the MA program and check the appropriate box on your application. This is true even if your ultimate degree objective is the PhD. When students are admitted into the MA program, it is assumed that they will continue on to the PhD, but they are required to make a separate application to that program during the spring semester of their second year in the MA. This is called an application for “Change of Status.” If you currently hold (or will soon be awarded) a Master’s degree in art history, you should apply directly to the PhD program and check the appropriate box on your application. If you currently hold (or will soon be awarded) a Master’s degree in another field, you should evaluate your transcript and determine if you have enough art history courses at the MA level to be admitted directly into the PhD.
