I don understand the JPEG images in Assignment 2. What are they?

There are 40 images, numbered 0001 to 0040 in the zip file (the jpg ones). You are to use all of them. The first one is done with ‘autofocus’ switched on. The others are done using manual focus, each step being a slight rotation of the focus ring. That is, some are short of the optimal focus point, some are beyond the optimal focus point, and a couple are close to being in focus. Just look at the images and you will see what I mean. They are taken in sequence, so 0002 is ‘before’ focus, 003 is slightly closer… etc until 0040 is way beyond focus. Think of focussing a camera or binoculars yourself.
