The OpenType format is no longer a new technology. It was developed jointly between Microsoft and Adobe and it was announced in 1996. It is a cross-platform format, can contain thousands of glyphs (technically over a million)(instead of the 255 per font in the old formats) and can house sophisticated code inside for advanced typographic layouts. Elements such as ligatures, small caps, and a numerous varieties of numbers can all be automatically typeset from the same font, instead of several separate and confusing old TrueType or Type 1 PostScript files. OpenType fonts are widely supported on Apple OS X and on PCs since Windows 2000. Most applications support OT fonts now, some major ones include: all Adobe CS products, QuarkXPress 7 or newer, Word 2003/2004 and newer. For other specific applications please check their documentation.
