I do not live near any of the areas where the Court Mediation Program is offered. What other opportunities exist for obtaining mediation experience?
While formal mediation practice opportunities are rare outside of the areas serviced by the Court Mediation Program, many beginning mediators located in other parts of the province have succeeded in obtaining mediation experience. Some of these mediators have accomplished this by networking creatively and aggressively with highly qualified, established mediators, who have allowed them to observe mediations and eventually to co-mediate with them. Potential applicants to the Roster should be aware that the Society has developed a set of criteria for assessing civil and family mediation practicums. The criteria are used by the Society’s Roster Committee, which is responsible for matters relating to admission, to determine the acceptability of practicums for the purpose of admission to the Civil and Family Rosters. The criteria are outlined in the document Assessment of Mediation Practicums: Civil and Family.
