I could walk to work but am concerned about safety on the way home when it’s dark. Why can’t I have a parking permit?

As well as being the cheapest and lowest carbon form of commuting, walking is one of the best forms of activity to improve your health. Experts recommend taking 10,000 steps a day – that’s nearly 3 miles! If you live within walking distance then it’s only fair to allow staff members that have a more difficult journey first option on the limited parking spaces available. A Walk BUDi scheme is available for you to find someone to share your journey with. Statistically, there are no routes around the University that are any less safe than in other towns. However, we do acknowledge that some people may have safety concerns and urge people to be sensible when walking to and from our sites. For example, stick to well lit areas rather than taking short cuts (the improved lighting on Victoria Park is designed to keep cyclists and pedestrians to the safer routes only), walk with others where possible and keep valuables such as mobile phones out of sight.
