I converted an Ogg Vorbis file to MP3 but the quality of the resulting file is poor. Why?

OGG and MP3 are both lossy file formats. What is happening is that the OGG encoder originally threw away data from the track, and when you convert to MP3 the MP3 encoder (LAME) is throwing away more data, so you lose quality.
