This can happen with incomplete Windows Media Video (.wmv) files. Start Media Player Classic and click on View in the top menu, then click on Options… (the last item) and then click on Tweaks and uncheck Use the WM ASF Reader for Windows Media files (enables faster seeking, but won’t seek with incomplete files at all).
