I can`t afford the annual fee for a TV Licence. Do I need one?
This question is often presented to staff in our Consumer Advice Centre. It is based upon the scenario of someone whose TV Licence is due to expire, but they can`t afford the annual fee. You need to be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record TV as it is being broadcast. This includes the use of devices such as a computer, laptop, mobile phone or DVD/video recorder. If you need a licence and you try to avoid paying for one, you risk prosecution and a possible fine of up to 1,000. The annual fee is 145.50 for a colour TV Licence or 49 for a black and white TV Licence. Rather than paying the fee in a lump sum, TV Licensing provide a number of different ways to pay for your Licence.
