I can’t afford graduate school, but I’ve heard that PhD students can be fully funded, so shouldn’t I get a PhD?
While many PhD program do fully fund their students, financial aid, grants, and teaching and research assistantships do exist for Master’s level students. It would be unwise to pursue a PhD if you’re only looking for a free education. Unfortunately, Master’s-level students tend to be responsible for paying the costs of their education. You can do so either by getting a scholarship(s), taking loans, a combination of loans and a work/study job, or — and this is rare, but it does happen — the program may allow you to be a teaching or research assistant or it may even offer scholarships. This varies by department, so you’ll need to do your research and see what each one offers.
