I bought The War Games, and the sound seems to cut out on the second tape. What gives?
It appears that all of the copies of this story that are on the North American market have a sound flaw in episodes seven to nine of this ten-part story. This flaw takes the form of the volume decreasing considerably anytime a character is not speaking or when there are no other loud noises going on. Recently, The War Games got a VHS re-release in the UK, and the Restoration Team took a look at the archived film prints and found a great deal of what appeared to be some sort of fungal damage burned into the prints of the later episodes of this story. This probably has something to do with why the sound on the original VHS release is so bad. My best guess is that someone tried to compensate for a sound problem that damage had created and turned the noise reduction up too high in the process. This is NOT a video duplication problem… they’re all like this, so it’s no good returning this to the store and asking for another tape.
