The main purpose of the carbon filter is to remove chlorine, which means the filter is designed to be used with municipal water. How often the filter should be changed depends on how much chlorine there is in your municipal water. If there is a lot of chlorine in the water, the filter should be changed once a year. If there is not as much the filter cartridge should be changed every 2 years. Contact your water authority to get this information. Anything over .5 ppm of chlorine is considered above average. If you have well water, the filter changed the carbon filter every 3-4 years. The carbon filter will also remove other unwanted elements found in drinking water such as VOCs (benzene, trihalomethanes, etc).
