You would need to register as a childminder. Registered Childminders are self-employed and work in their own homes, to provide care and education for other peoples children in a family setting. No formal qualifications are needed to be a childminder, but to register you must complete a fourteen week course for three hours per week. In addition, you will undertake an extra 12 hours paediatric First Aid training and a one day food hygiene course. As part of the Ofsted registration a number of checks are undertaken on the childminder and anyone over 16 living at the same address and any visitors who have regular contact with the children. For more information you can contact the Children’s Information Services, Redcar and Cleveland Council who will advise you and send out an information pack. Telephone 01642 771173.
