I am worried about the Webbing Deployment System and particularly about placing the stainless steel ring over my thumb. What happens if I deploy the unit to deep or the system gets snagged?
The stainless steel ring on the WDS is quite large and highly polished, and will easily slip off your thumb without any problems in case the unit gets snagged, all you have to do is open your thumb (thumbs up and its away). You are not tying yourself to anything you are simply slipping a over sized stainless steel ring (internal diameter 3cm or 1.18″) over your thumb which is only holding the unit while it deploys. Basically in the same manner as you would hold a small handle with your thumb – open you thumb release the handle. Should you deploy the unit deeper that the allowed depth for the WDS (5.5m / 18ft) you will fell a gentle upwards tug on the lanyard allowing you to release it. The webbing actually absorbs most of the shock due to its width, length and inherent elasticity.
