Before the introduction of the Compact Prime CP.2, some companies began modifying the DSLR camera body in order to use a PL-mount cine lens. While the idea of using a cine style lens on a DSLR is valid, this approach involves the removal of the standard EF mount and the camera’s mirror box. Besides voiding the manufacturer’s warranty, the camera becomes dedicated for video use and a standard still photo lens can no longer be used. Also, since most PL mount cine lenses cover less than a 32mm image circle, they are only compatible with camera’s using the APS-C size sensor. Instead, Carl Zeiss has introduced a true cine style lens that fits directly to the DSLR without any modification of the camera. Since these new lenses are designed to cover a full frame, they are compatible with cameras using the APS-C, APS-H and 24×36 sensors. The new Compact Prime CP.2 provides all of the benefits of a cine lens on a wider range of cameras, without any modification of the camera.
