I am trying to research a book Im writing. Can anyone give me an overview of security one might find in an art museum?
Well I have worked in museums and have taken care of the collections. Our first defense is how the public enters the building which is separate from staff and professional visitors. Staff have ID cards and pass through a station of guards and must have their ID visible at all times. The guard station has monitors and shifts walking through the museum. The public is directed through the museum through good interior and exhibit design, they should also have a means of identifying that they are paid visitors. Careful detail goes into: collection security such as display cases, controlled environments, access, storage and condition reporting. Museums were ahead in the case of Disaster Planning to protect their biggest purpose: their collections. Security is a multi-faceted concern but it is more hands-on than the flashy, hi-tech extremes in a thrilling movie.
