yes tortoises do carry salmonella but with basic hygiene it should never be a problem, the rules for keeping all reptile is to wash your hands after handling reptiles or cleaning out cages, also keeping pens clean helps as well, this also applies to tortoises, i have never got anything from my tortoises so it is nothing to stress about and should not spoil the idea of getting a reptile as a pet,
