As long as there isn’t a flow switch in the heater it doesn’t matter which way the water flows. Flow switches are directional and pressure switches are not. However, pressure switches have to be installed on the output side (pressure side) of the pump while a flow switch will work on either side. As far as the heater itself, as long as it is filled with moving water it doesn’t matter which direction it flows.
