There are many factors which can contribute to connect problems, and disconnections. Here are a few. If you are using windows 3.1 and an external modem, your computer may not be able to keep up with a modem speed faster than 9600bps. You need to make sure that you have a 16550 UART, and not the older 8250. You can check this by running MSD from the DOS prompt. If you do have the older UART, then you have three options: purchase an internal modem, purchase a 16550 UART serial card, or purchase windows95. Either of these options should serve you well. If the modem negotiates at a high speed, but then has problems keeping the connection, there may be trouble with your phone line. Try forcing your modem to connect at a lower speed (e.g. 24kbps or 26.4kbps instead of 28.8kbps). To do this, you must send a special init string to the modem. Look for DCE speed in your modem manual to find a way to restrict the maximum DCE speed. In windows95, you can enter this command by going to control-pane
