A. There are a few options with regard to getting from Bangkok to Chiang Rai. As you mentioned, one way is to take the train to Chiang Mai, then get a bus to Chiang Rai. There are a few overnight (sleeper) trains you can get, otherwise, the day train is pretty slow & takes a couple of days.
