I am currently a GAL (or have served as a GAL within five years before March 1, 2009). How long do I have to comply with the educational requirements of Rule 48?
As stated in Sup. R. 48(E)(7), “An individual who is currently serving as a guardian ad litem on the effective date of this rule, or who has served during the five years immediately preceding the effective date, shall have one year from the effective date to obtain the required six hour pre-service training in order to avoid removal from the court’s list of approved guardians ad litem.” Since the effective date is March 1, 2009, guardians ad litem have until March 1, 2010 to complete the pre-service training. Certain GAL pre-service courses taken before March 1, 2009 satisfy this requirement. See Question No. 7 below. Continuing Education Training: The dates by which GALs must take their first three hour continuing GAL education course is determined by the dates the six hour pre-service course is taken. See Continuing GAL Education Courses.
